Vermeer: Painter of Locals
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, and Rembrandt is known as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age.
The theme of Vermeer’s works is mostly based on life. His bright and bold colors, rigorous and straightforward composition, and the pictures he depicts are often warm and quiet. However, the outstanding painter died miserably at the age of 43, leaving no one interested in his paintings, leaving his wife and 11 children. In the words of his wife, Vermeer was “due to the burden of a large family and no means of earning a living, causing him to fall into depression and depression, and then delirium, and a good person suddenly died of illness within a day or two.” But two centuries later, his work was rediscovered. The paintings were so warm and realistic that some critics thought that “this is not art.”
Vermeer left so few materials before his death that he didn’t know much about himself or his works. This painting was restored in 1994. Scholars believe that this is a popular avatar (Tronie) in the Netherlands in the 17th century. The artist captured the moment when the girl looked back. In the painting, the girl’s clothes are soft, and the contrast between light and dark is displayed on the pearl earrings. The girl looks back sideways, she says, and her eyes are affectionate and robust. Many people think that only the smile of “Mona Lisa” can be comparable.
This is another excellent folk work left by Vermeer. The maid in the picture is wearing a linen hat and a blue apron. Her sleeves are rolled up to reveal a thick arm. She is carefully pouring milk from the jug into the pot. A variety of bread was placed on the table, and there was a stove next to her feet. From this painting, Vermeer has bright colors and a simple layout. The maid’s identity becomes a mystery, which also adds a sense of mystery to this work.
