Rogier van der Weyden is an early Flemish outstanding painter. His influence once surpassed Van Eyck (Van Eyck), but because of the following changes in aesthetics, his works were forgotten and did not reappear until 200 years later.

Most of Van de Weyden’s paintings are religious subjects. The characters are idealized, colorful, and warm, so the work has durable expressive power and a warm heart.

The Descent from the Cross, Rogier van der Weyden, 1435, Oil on oak panel, 220cmx262cm Museo del Prado, Madrid

This “Jesus Cross” is an early work of Van de Weyden, but because of the intense emotional depiction and delicate layout in the picture, this work became the most influential work of the Dutch Renaissance.

The painting depicts the scene where Jesus was crucified, and the Virgin and his disciples laid him off the cross. Van de Weiden showed different levels and types of sorrow in the picture. Virgin Mary, in the dark blue dress in the painting, was stunned and died on the ground. The solemn St. John in the red robe And calm, tolerate grief, Mary Magdalene in the red, yellow, and purple dresses on the far right of the screen is in despair, crying, and other disciples are silent or crying. Van de Weyden accurately grasped the emotions of each character, and through the appropriate rendering, injected sharp sorrow into the picture.

Van de Weyden skillfully used the balancing technique. In essence, the fallen posture of the Virgin Mary echoes the stance of the physical death of Jesus, just like the diagonal line in the picture, and the positions of Mary Magdalene and St. John The brackets generally echo symmetrically. The color and texture of the characters in the painting are also particular. The use of materials such as sable, silk, gold thread embroidery, linen, leather, and rope makes the whole picture symmetrical and fluid.
